Rachel Singleton Obituary

Ms. Rachel Singletion, 62, slipped into eternal rest on November5, 2013 at Coastal Carolina Hospital, Hardeeville SC. Rachel Mae Singleton, 62, of Hardeeville, made her transition at 11:30 AM, Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at Coastal CarolinaHospital in Hardeeville, SC.  She was born September 28, 1951, in Ridgeland, SC to Marion and Ruth Ann Middleton Singleton, the youngest daughter of five children.  Her brothers, Marion Singleton, Robert Singleton,and Willie Singleton preceded her indeath.  Rachel accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of the Fisher Chapel United Methodist Church, Hardeeville,SC where she faithfully served until her illness became apparent.A career educator, Rachel retired from Savannah High School in2011 as a science teacher.  During her career, she taught in he Chatham County School District, Savannah, GA and the JasperCounty Schol District Ridgeland, SC  as Life Science and Earth instructor.  At th collegiate level, she was ain insructor of medicalterminology,anatomy and physiology at Benedict College, ColumbiaSC, (1983-1988). mathematics at Midland Technical Collge, Columbia, SC (1984), science teacher at Clemson University Extension Vision for Youth Program, (1992-1993). She completed summer internships in the laboratories of the University of MichiganSouth carolina States College and worked as medical technologistat Hilton Head Hospital, Jasper County General Hospital, Lexington County Hospital, and Richland Memorial Hospital.Rachel graduated from Matthew E. West High School, Hardeeville,SC in 1970. She went on to earn a B.S. in Biology from VoorheesCollege in1974, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society and graduated Cum laude, and a M.ED in Bology from South Carolina State Colloge in 1982.  Her lifelong learning pursuitsincluded coursework at the University of South Carolina, Midland Technical College, and Fisk University.Rachel was an extermely kind and accomplish woman.  She will beremembered as a teacher who went out of her way to help her students gain entrance to college and pursue careers in science.She took pride on the accomplishments of her students and at times felt frustration if they did not perform to the best of theirabilities.  So she pushed and pushed her students to work hard.  Her dedication to teaching and desire for student success will become part of her legacy.  Her ability to connect extended outside of the classroom to her family & community at large.  Shewas a great friend and supporter to many, easy to talk to and laugh with.  She was dedicated, funny, creative, and most of allloved.  In additonal to inspiring young scientific minds,  she lovedsewing, macrame, ceramics, furniture refinishing, beagles, andbaking pecan pies.Surving are two sons, Marion "Shon" Singleton (Kelly) of Columbia,SC, and Michael Singleton of Hardeeville, SC; one daughter, Karen Griffin (Tim) of Columbia, SC; one sister,Jannie Baker of HardeevilleSC; one aunt Retha Mitchell of Philadelphia, PA; five nephews: Byron Singleton, Joseph Singleton, Christopher Singleton, Isaac Singleton, all of Hardeeville, SC and Charles Baker of Gonzales, LA;one niece, Tia Williams (Glen), Atlanta, GA; one grandson, TimothyGriffins; two granddaughters, Karen Griffin and Brittney Singleton;a host of grandnieces and nephews, othe family members and friends.
