John Redmon Obituary

Obituary John Richard Redmon was born October 5, 1932 to the lateElmore H. Redmon, Sr. and Mable Douglass Bottoms Redmon inCincinnati, Ohio. John was the 8th of 12 children to their union. Hewas preceded in death by Alice,Charles,Clarence,Mable,Katherine,Elmore Jr.,Nancy, Albert and Betty. John accepted Christ at an early age at Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church. He departedthis life on the morning of October 24, 2011 in Hilton Head, SouthCarolina.John received his primary and secondary education in the GlendalePublic School System. John and his sibling had a lot of games and one bicycle and he always described his childhood as a happy one.While attending high school in Glendale he was known as "Soupbone". His athletic prowess garnered him a full scholarshipto Florida A & M Uninersity in Tallahassee, Florida.He entererd the armed services in 1952 and served his countryvaliantly during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorabledischarge, he moved to Washington, D.C. to live with his sister,Grace Redmon Busby, then a recent graduate of Howard University, and her husband, Charles Busby.There he met and fell head over heels for his wife of 29 years, Lena Wright Redmon.  As they contemplated starting a family, John, ever the industrious one, worked for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and People's Drug Store while attending drafting school.  Soon their union was blessed with the birth of their son, Jonathan Richard Redmon.  Their daughter, Chantaye Elizabeth came a few years later.In 1958, his outgoing personality and ardent desire to make a contribution to the less fortunate caused  him to join The Metroplitan Draftsmen, a society of fellow engineers organized to faciiliate  community service, fellowship and camaraderie. John remained asn active member of this brotherhood of like-minded, African American professionsls until it disbanded over 40 years later.John prided himself on having taken his family to vist approximately 46 of the 50 states and three (3) countries.  He and Lena painstakingly planned these wonderful vacations tobe both educational and great fun. After his childrem reached adulthood, he continued to be well traveled.  St Marten,Trinidad for Carnival and the Bahamas anytime were a few of his favorite destinations.During John's 33 some odd years he worked for Department of Consumer nd Regulatory Affairs.  He held numerous interesting and responsible positions purposed at the protection of the environment from the danagers of sediment and soil erosion.  He often cited and even shut down offending construction sities.  Moreover, he was call upon to testify in court as an expert witness on behalf on the District government mamny, manay times.  He loved his avocation and remained abrest of current developments  therein long after he retired.  He lost his wofe lena in 1986.Several years later in 2000, he met, fell in love, and married Pamelan Redmon.  THey were married at St. John Baptist Church in Columbia, MD.  During those years, John kept in touch with his friedns from the D.C. area by  playing golf and visiting them in therir homes.  His friends continued to grow in Columbia, MD through the Epicureans, Inc., a national organization of woman called, "Eppies" and whose husbands and fondly called, "Eppos".  Trips and excursions were taken to visit his family and friends and to St. Croix for one of Pam and John's wedding anniversaries.  John  became a member St. John Baptist Church where he joined the choir and served as an usher formamy years.  Healthconcerns began bothering John and he decided that the warm climate of south was where  he should go.  So off he went to beautiful Sun City in Bluffton, South Carolina.  His love of sports did not end, he continued to go deep sea fishing, golfing, and even playing tennis until he was no longer physically able to enjoy these outings.  Then he watched his " beloved" Red Skins.  His  loves of all things culinary made those who were lucky enough to partake. wonder why he never had a restaurant of cooking show.  As all who knew him recognized, he was quite the grill master and his spare ribs were a favorite.  Most recently, John  and Pam joined Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Bluffton.  Althought his health prevented John from participating as much as he would like, his love for God and the church remained.John is survived by his wife Pamela, his sisters Grace Redmond Busby and Margie Remond Wynn (Doug), his children Rick and Chantaye, his grandchildren Daniella and Samantha Reid, step-children Scott and Lori and step-grandchildren, Alexis, Joshue, and Skye, several sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and countless other who loved his dearly and miss him tremendously.
