Ida Martin Ida M. Martin, 86, slipped into eternal rest on June 12, 2013 atBeaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort SC. Public viewing from 9 am until the hourof service.Mrs. Ida Magwood Mrtin was born on January 22, 1927 in Whitehall, South carolina. Ida lived in Savannah, Georgia as a littlegirl. After the death of her mother, Ida was adopted at the age offive by her Uncle Haskell Magwood. Ida was raised with other cousins whose mothers had preceded them in death. They were all raised as loving sisters and brothers. Her uncle was a firemanfor the railroad and provided a good home.Ida started primary school in Savannah, Georgia and completedher secondary academic years in Chatham, Colleton and Beaufortcounties. After high school, she attended Shanklin Boarding School where she met the love of her life, Jake Martin. She received her license to practical nursing (LPN) while attending John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.Ida was joined in Holy Matrimory on October 30, 1948 to JacobJoseph Martin. To this union four children were born: Richard Martin I; who preceded her in death, Richard II; Constance andCrawford Martin.In 1979, Jacob and Ida Martin retired of Jacob's hometown Bluffton,SC from Detroit, MI. After Ida's arrival to Bluffton, shequickly became engaged in the Bluffton Community. She joined Campbell Chapel AME Church under the leadership of Rev. SamuelL. McPherson. She became very active in the church, touching almost every intregral part of the church ministries. However, herheart was with the Women's Missionary Society (WMS). She be-came the President of the WMS and in later years held other positions. She was member of the Stewardess Board, the combined choir, a class leader, and advisor to the Young Voicesof Praise Choir, Vacation Bible School Arts and Crafts teacher andan avid student of bible study and church school. Ida's work in the church did not stop at the local level when it came to mission work. She worked on all levles of the connectional church. Shewas honored with the presige of a Torch Lighter of the Beaufort District of the South Carolina Conference Branch WMS. She sangon the district and conference choirs. She was a parliamentarian for the Beaufort District WMS and chairperson of the Heath Polk Rural Commission of the South Carolina Conference Branch WMS.She travelled extensively for the church on all levels and attendedDistrict, Annual and General Conferences of the AME Church.At the age of 60,when most people are resting on their laurels, Idafounded Bluffton Self Help, a non-profit orginization that assiststhose neighbors facing hunger and provery. This is a 501c3 agency governed by a broad of directors and 2.5 staff members.The agency started out of the Martin's garage, progressively moved to larger facilities as it expended. Today Bluffton Self Helpis located in a 6, 500 square foot building at 39 Sheridan Park Circle in Bluffton.For her work, Ida has been recognized at the community, stateand national level. In 1990. she was recognized at the state leveland named Volunteer of the Year in South Carolina. On the federallevel in 2011, she recevied the coveted Presidental Citizens Medalone of he thirteen recipients out of 6,000 nominations. This awardis one of the nation's highest civilian honors. April 4th, 2011begins an annual "Ida Martin Day" in the town of Bluffton. TheTown of Bluffton recognized Mrs.Martin in 2012 and she holds aspot on the Wall of Honor in the town hall. She was the first women of the five honored and the only one to receive a place onthe wall while still living. In 2012, Ida also recevied the HiltonHead Bluffton Chamber of Commerce Alice Glenn Doughtie Citizenship Award. She served as Grand Marshal for BluffftonObservance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther Kin, Jr. Day and Bluffton Christmas Parades. Ida was a member of the Eureka Club, the EllaC.White Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. Broad of Directors, St.Catherine Chapter #46 Order of the Eastern Stars,and the Broad of Directors of Self-Help.Ida will be most remembered for her big heart, faith in her fellow man and her tenacious work ethic that moved her forward even as her body tired.On Tuesday, June 12, 2013, Ida Magwood Martin, answered the Master's call and entered into eternal rest. Ida was preceded in death by five brothers: JR. Magwood, Hurley Magwood, TherodaMagwood, Elmore Magwood and Horace Magwood; two sisters:Mary Magwood and Marie Washington. The beloved and cherished memories of Ida will remain in the hearts of her belovedand devoted husband Jacob "Jake" Martain of Bluffton, SouthCarolina; one attentive daughter: Constance Martin of Hardeeville,South Carolina; six grandchildren: Latisha Martin of Glen Allen,Virginia; Mikesha (Courtney) Middlebrook, of Atlantam Georgia; Christopher (Trisha) Martin of Atlanta, Georgia; Jennifer Martin ofChicago, Illinois; Candyce Childress of Riverview, Michigan andJordan Martin of Florrisant, Missouri; three Great-grandchildren:Beloize Kosoko, Nathaniel Martin, Nicholas Martin and soon toarrive Ava Middlebrook; four sisters: Lou Singleton, Nancy Grant,Carolyn Smalls, Lucile Wright (Jerive); three brothers: Horace FordEddie Haskell (Diane) and Ronald Magwood; two brothers-in-laws:James "Buster" Martin, Honorable Daniel (Ruby) Martin, Sr.; threesisters-in-law: Margaret Martin, Rev.Dr. Vivian L. Martin-Jones,and Mildred Redman; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Ida will also be missed by members of her extended family: Sharon Brown, Janie Smith and family all ofBluffton, South Carolina.
