A Time To Be Born And A Time to Die: Ms. Dorothy (Dottie) Whitaker, one of two daughters and two sons nurtured by Nelson and Mary Whitaker, was born August 27, 1936. SHe was alsonutured by Susie Williams, her godmother. Early in life she left her native Georgia to relocate in New York City where she lived from 1944 until demise. She enjoyed an active and productive lifebefore closing her eyes for eternal sleep on March 17, 2012 atVNSNY Home and Hospice Haven at NYC Bellview.A Time To Plant And A Time To Build: She attended Junior HighSchool #136 and graduated from Washington Irving High School in1956. Immeduately upon graduation, she was employed as a checker by the A&P supermarket.A Time To Be Silent and A Time To Speak: After working as a meat wrapper, she earned an appointment as an organizer for theunion, Butchers, Food Handlers, and Allied Workers Union, Local174 A.M.C. & B.W. of N.A. AFL-CIO. She served on the Civil RightsCommittee, the Sports Committee, and the Women's Committee.She was a member of the Local 174 Executive Board, and beforeretiring, she served as President.A Time To Embrace: As a young adult, she became affilited with the Roman Catholic Church. She was a member of civil rights organizations and made contributions to charities such as Publicand Educational Television Networks.A Time To Laugh and A Time To Dance: She traveled extensivelythroughout North America. The Wednesday Amateur Night at theApollo was one of her favorite places of entertainment. Sheplanned trips to amusement parks for the excitement of the ridesand games as well as eating delicacies such as frog legs. She tried her luck at the Casinos. Her bowling average was 135.00.She also enjoyed concerts, dances and Broadway plays.A Time To Love: Cherishing the precious memories are her sister,Elizabeth Till (Louis) of Chicago, Illinois: her brother, Nelson III ofHardeeville, SC; her aunt, Carrie L. Stevens of Hephzibah, Georgia;her sister-in-law, Sarah Frierson of New York City; two nieces,Regina Frierson of New York City and Karen Tiller of Chicago, ILL; two nephews, Vraig Frierson (Donna) of New York City and MichaelTiller of Chicago; and her goddaughter, Tyeese Newton, cousins and friends.
